History of the N611 RAF(Auxiliary)Squadron

No 611 (West Lancashire) Squadron

Formed at Hendon as part of the Auxiliary Air Force on 10 February 1936, it moved North to Speke in May
and received its first aircraft, Harts, in June. Until January 1939 it operated as a day bomber squadron,
re-equipping with Hinds in 1938, but was then re-designated a fighter squadron.

Spitfires arrived in May 1939 and the squadron carried out operations over Dunkirk and then took part
in the Battle of Britain. It operated in the day fighter role throughout WW2
and remained bases in the UK at various locations until disbanding at Peterhead on 15 August 1945.

Pilot's Story

Sqdn.Ldr. Hugo Armstrong....

Australian Hugo Armstrong (nicknamed 'Sinker') was credited with 12 kills during World War 2
all of them on Spitfires and all with RAF Squadrons.
Of those, the last three were while flying Spitfire MkIXs with No.611 Sqdn. Biggin Hill.
Commissioned as a Pilot Officer in early 1942, he served with No.129 and No.72 Sqdns
until July 1942 when he was posted as OC to No.611 Sqdn. By this time his tally had
reached 9 confirmed kills.
Moving the No.611 sqdn. gave Armstrong his first opportunity to fly MkIXs and
all three of his last victories on this Marque (plus two probables) were scored
in Spitfire BS435/ 'FY*F'.
These proved to be Sqdn. Ldr. Hugo Armstrong's last victories for two weeks later,
February 5 1943, while attempting to join a sweep being staged by No.340 Sqdn.
His group was attacked by eight Fw190s of 5./JG 26 when he was shot down and killed.
-Ofz. Heinz Gomann (13 kills) was credited with this victory.

This skin is another indulgance of mine and is somewhat fictional.
The Squadron codes & production number are correct from Sdn.Ldr. Armstrong's Spitfire
of the 611th British Auxiliary Squadron.
Pilot's nickname 'Sinker' applied to the RS fuselage may possibly be fictional.
Everything else is just me goofing around...
This skin can be used for Emil's 9thUSAAF/2TAF Campaign if you so desire....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Skin was developed from Nico's Spitfire 'PK*K' which in turn was
based on the HR skin by DeanH and the HR 3Dz model by Col. Gibbon
further modified by Ray Otton...
Other enhancements; Carl'Peregine'Ringvold's Adj. RAFMk3 Gunsight...
Dallas'Pathfinder'Parrot's Merlin engine 'Start-up' sound...
Jander's Merlin engine 'In-flight' sound...
John 'Col.Gibbon' Graham's HR Spitfire MkIX Spinner...
Ray'Rotton50'Otton modified the original model to create this excellent
LF 'Clipped Wing' MkIXe version...
As usual I've tweaked some, but not all, of this skin's detailing......
